Cleveland Chiropractic College alumnus endorsed for office by CCA
February 19, 2010

The California Chiropractic Association (CCA) recently announced their support for a political candidate who is a graduate of Cleveland Chiropractic College-Los Angeles. Dr. Bill Jose Uriarte ’77 is running in the Democratic primary for the 7th Assembly District which encompasses Santa Rosa, Napa County, Vallejo and Fairfield.

The endorsement of Uriarte is indicative of the CCA’s desire to elect doctors of chiropractic to the state legislature. Uriarte is seeking the seat vacated by Assembly Member Noreen Evans who, because of term limits, will "term out" in 2010. As voters in the district are overwhelmingly Democratic, the winner of the primary is expected to face little resistance in the general election.

Since graduation, Uriarte has practiced in Santa Rosa, Windsor, Rohnert Park and the Los Angeles area. He now practices on-call throughout Sonoma, Marin and San Francisco counties. He has been chair of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and was named one of the "Top 25 Leaders of Sonoma County" in 1992 by the Santa Rosa Press Democrat newspaper. Uriarte previously served CCA as secretary and second vice president, and was named "Doctor of the Year" for 1982-83.

Dr. Ashley Cleveland helps author “Chiropractic Peace”
September 18, 2009

Dr. Ashley Cleveland ’95 is one of three primary contributors to a new book titled “Chiropractic Peace” along with Dr. Gerard Clum, president of Life Chiropractic College West, and Dr. Reed Phillips, who until recently was vice president of the Foundation of Chiropractic Education and Research. The book examines the three dominant perspectives along the continuum of chiropractic thought – broad scope, middle scope and focused scope. Executive editor Dr. Bill McDonald is responsible for the book’s premise and contributes reflections on the three monographs as do David Chapman-Smith, attorney and editor of The Chiropractic Report, and Dr. Victor Strang, a professor at Palmer College of Chiropractic. The essays clearly demonstrate that respect for and even appreciation of differences in chiropractic thought and practice styles are not only possible but necessary.

Salas to retire from bookstore after 24 years
September 3, 2009

After more than 23 years of service to CCCLA, the College will soon have to adjust to life without Jake Salas, who will retire at the beginning of the Fall trimester. As the long-time manger of the campus bookstore, Salas is known for his smile and friendly demeanor, but also for his hard work. When he joined the College on Oct. 13, 1985, the bookstore contained only books and supplies. Over time, Salas monitored the fashion trends and  expanded the bookstore’s offerings to include attractive, contemporary Cleveland apparel. In time, the halls of CCCLA became populated with those wearing the Cleveland brand. Working the bookstore on his own, Salas has always been a beloved member of the campus community. Students often stop in the bookstore just to visit with him even if they don’t need to purchase anything. Salas will be in the bookstore for the first two weeks of the Fall trimester, so stop by and wish him well. At the conclusion of the two weeks, Salas will close the book on his time at CCCLA. The College wishes him the best of luck with the next chapter of his life..

Commissioning of D.C.’s closer with Dr. Redwood’s help
July 23, 2009

Dr. Dan Redwood, CCCKC associate professor, was recently contacted by Senator Sam Brownback’s office regarding the commissioning of doctors of chiropractic to serve within the U.S. Public Health Service. When Brownback was on campus several weeks ago, Redwood had asked the senator whether Congress might consider mandating the inclusion of chiropractors in the program, to which the senator responded, “That’s an interesting idea…we will look into providing that as a policy option.” Members of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps serve for two years in underserved areas for which they receive a salary and partial student loan forgiveness. The chief member of the senator’s health team followed up with Redwood; subsequently language was drafted which now appears in the Senate Appropriations Committee report. The bill still needs to pass the Senate, make it through the House-Senate Committee and be signed by the President, but the chances of it becoming law are now far greater than ever before.

Drs. Ashley Cleveland and Cheryl Hawk present at WFC meetings
June 19, 2009

Two CCCKC administrators recently played important roles in meetings coordinated by the World Federation of Chiropractic (WFC).

Hawk was invited as a health policy expert to address the WFC Assembly in Montreal on April 27-28. Her presentation focused on the current trend towards health promotion and disease prevention, and patient needs and the role of chiropractic in that context.

Cleveland presented a paper on "Teaching Philosophy in Chiropractic Education in the 21st Century" at the WFC’s 10th Biennial Congress April 30-May 2 in Montreal. Her paper sought to examine the existing conditions in philosophical education within the chiropractic colleges, and to suggest what must be done to transition from a dogmatic presentation of principles to a true exploration of what it means to be human, to be embodied, and to experience the spectrum from maximum adaptability to disease and, ultimately, death.

International guests visit CCCKC

The College’s Kansas City campus played host June 8 to three representatives from Real Centro Universitario Escorial-Maria Cristina, in Madrid, Spain.  Edelmiro Mateos Mateos and two of his associates toured the facility and met with Dr. Carl S. Cleveland III, president, and Dr. John Nab, vice president of professional development and alumni services, as well as some Cleveland alumni and other dignitaries.

Currently, there are about 160 chiropractors in Spain. Until recently, all those pursuing the Doctor of Chiropractic degree did so outside the country. In 2006, the university reached an agreement with the Asociación Española de Quiropráctica (Spanish Chiropractic Association – AEQ) to offer the first university-level chiropractic degree in Spain. As chiropractic education is still in its infancy in Spain, the administrators traveled to the United States to explore the educational experience at CCCKC.
